The Lady Chapel
In the south transcept of St
Paul's is the Lady Chapel, which is used
for smaller services. In its east
wall is our only stained glass
window, depicting the Annunciation
of the Virgin. This resulted from
a bequest of Mr Moody. It was
designed and made by EJ Dilworth
of Twickenham and installed in
1962.
The two main panels of the
window show the Archangel Gabriel
on the left, and the Virgin Mary
on the right, who is seen sitting
with hands outstretched. The
Archangel is bearing a
verge, a rod or wand,
symbolising the bearer of
important news or herald of an
important visitor (from where we
get the word Verger today).
Mary's colour, by tradition, is
blue and this colour predominates
in the whole window. Above Mary
flies a dove, used to represent
the Holy Spirit.
At the base of the window we find
King David and the Prophet Isaiah.
Isaiah holds a scroll bearing the
name Immanuel, reminding us how he
prophesised that, as St Matthew
recalls, the virgin shall
conceive and bear a son and they
shall name him Immanuel, which
means God with us (see Matthew 1:22-23). Jesus was
of the House of David, that is, he
was directly descended from King
David (whose own father was
Jesse). In the window, foilage sprouts from the
end of David's sword, alluding to
another prophesy of Isaiah: A
shoot shall come out of the stock
of Jesse, and a branch shall grow
out of his roots. The spirit of
the Lord will rest on him, the
spirit of wisdom and
understanding, the spirit of
counsel and might, the spirit of
knowledge and fear of the
Lord. (Isaiah 11:1)
The small top section of the
window shows bread and a chalice
of wine as used in the Eucharist
with a hand that has the thumb and
two fingers extended - a way of
picturing Jesus blessing over all
creation.
Flags
The flags of the Royal British
Legion, Egham & Hythe Branch
and of the Air Training Corps, 398
Squadron, Staines, Egham &
District hang in front of the organ pipes.
